How to let me know that you’d like a change.

I think it’s likely, perhaps inevitable, that there will be something I do in a massage therapy session that doesn’t suit you, and you’ll be laying there wondering whether you should say something. I think you should.

My invitation to you is: The moment you feel that you’d like a change, give me a cue that signals “it’s time to pause and check-in.Here’s how you can get my attention, and what will happen when you do.

You can:

  • tap the table

  • raise your finger, hand, or foot

  • make a sound “umm…” “hmm…” “excuse me…”

  • ask “Can you pause for a moment?

  • say “I’m noticing something” or “I’d like a change.”

Here’s what you can expect from me:

  • I’ll stop moving my hands and listen to what you have to say,

  • I might ask questions to better understand what you’re experiencing,

  • We’ll decide what changes to make, and continue when we’re both ready,

  • and, if you’re not interested in continuing or if the change you need isn’t something I can provide, we can end the session.

I think it’s great when a client asks for a change. It shows me that they are dialed in to their experience, honoring what they need in that moment, and actively engaging in their treatment. All good things. It also allows me to respond collaboratively and creativity, helping you make the most of your massage therapy session.
